Thetunnel has been inaccessible to traffic since Monday, September 2 for more thanthree months for major maintenance works: during this period, maintenance work oflarge sections of the road deck and the ceiling will be carried out, which willallow two 300m sections of the tunnel to be renovated.
The Mont Blanctunnel, which is 11.6 kilometres long, consists of a single gallery withtwo-way traffic that connects Courmayeur, in Valle d’Aosta, to Chamonix, in theFrench department of Haute-Savoie. Inconveniences for truck drivers are expected,as the tunnel represents one of the most important road links between France and Italy.
The alternative routes to the tunnel are: the Great St Bernard tunnel to go toSwitzerland or to the French areas bordering Switzerland, and the Frejus tunnelto go to the south-east side of Mont Blanc.
