Starting January 1st, 2025, several European countries have implemented new toll regulations and rate increases for heavy goods vehicles. Significant changes include a motorway toll increase for heavy goods vehicles in Austria.
Specifically, Austria has implemented a 12% increase in highway tolls for vehicles with a gross weight over 3.5 tonnes. The increase also affects some road and highway sections, with different tariffs for Alpine sections and tunnels including the A9 Pyhrn Motorway (Gleinalm and Bosruck Tunnel); A10 Tauern Motorway (Tauern and Katschberg Tunnel); A11 Karawanken Motorway (Karawanks Tunnel); A13 Brenner Motorway; S16 Arlberg Highway (Arlberg Tunnel). The toll increase concerns also the highest emission classes, including Euro VI. For example, for an articulated truck Euro V the toll rises to €0.5577 per km, an increase of 11.76% compared to 2024. A truck Euro VI class 1 pays €0.5317 per km, an increase of 12.41%.
This is a significant increase for trucks circulating in Austria, as well as for the entire road freight transport sector; for transport companies it represents an increase in operating costs, in addition to the general cost increases in the sector. It is important for transport companies to be always updated on the new tolls as well as to monitor the emission classes of their heavy vehicles.
